Dear Ron, How Good is Weaver Scope?

Q: Several years ago you made a video with a beautiful 375 and it had a 2-8 Weaver Grand Slam on it. I am in the process of buying a 375 and have that exact scope in my cabinet. How did it hold up? Any issues with it on a larger bore rifle?

A: Funny you should ask at this time. I was just looking at a photo of that rifle/scope yesterday! You know, I used that rig to take hippo and croc with one shot each. And that was it. Never used it again. So long-term durability remains undetermined, but initial setup and use indicated all was well. The look, feel, and repeatability of the scope were right on and recoil during sight-in, practice, and the hunts did no damage. Generally, if a scope is going to fail under recoil due to poor build quality it will do so in the first 20 rounds or so. I had that happen 26 years ago with a Simmons atop a 330 Dakota. One of the lenses, probably the reticle lens, shifted forward or back slightly to throw off focus. I was just able to compensate by turning the diopter to its max. Went on to go 12 for 12 on game! Oddball scope setups like this resulted, over my career, from "dancing with the one that brought you," i.e. I was a guest of the gun/optic companies involved in the hunts. This is the main way we gun writers get to test so many different products. If we had to buy them all, we'd know precious little about more than a few!

Good luck with whatever you decide.
