Gear Up for Hunting Seasons Coming Up

New boots, new rifle, new scope, new truck — we hunters have a way of justifying big ticket items for our essential lifestyle. And now is the season to get it.

But don’t stop with the major pieces. While all the above are important if not critical, many smaller items can make or break a hunt. Take the summer time to think through everything you might need or use for a successful hunt. That means a short morning or evening hunt, a full day hunt, a weekend sortie, or a longer, major expedition.

It’s easy to forget essentials until you need them. Something as simple as lip balm can set you up for a week of miserable fever blisters. Forgetting a few headache tablets could ruin your day. Skimping on water can lead to serious dehydration.

Yeah, it’s macho to pretend we can stroll naked into the wilderness and emerge rosy cheeked and ten pounds heavier, but after 10 hours of hiking with nothing to eat, pretend time is over! The wise hunter prepares like a Boy Scout.

We hope this illustrated list of 10 essentials gets you thinking about preparing your pack, your pockets, and your shopping list for these and the dozens of other items you’re sure to think of if you just spend the time and reflect on past hunts on which you suffered. I’ll never forget the time we forgot spare keys for the truck. Nor the time we though a liter of water would suffice for a “quick stalk” in the high desert. And Don certainly won’t forget the hunt on which he slept round a campfire because he’d forgotten his sleeping bag.

Make your list, Santa, and check it twice, thrice, and more often through out the summer. Tape a list to the closet door where you store your pack, jackets and boots. Add to it each time you think of another small essential. Then buy it.

Finally, before you head afield, consult this list, check things off, and depart knowing that you are prepared!
