Dear Ron: Will fast twist 25-06 give major problems?

Q: Referencing the 25-06. after watching your comparison between the 25-06 and the 6.5 credmore, I started to wonder if it would be feasible to have a 25-06 barrel built with a 1 in 7 twists and a slightly long throat? Would I be running into major problems?

A: Rupert!

I ordered a 1:7.5 twist 25-06 barrel from Shaw Custom Barrels in Pittsburg. Shoots lighter bullets and up to 120-grains very well. Now I just have to load up some 130-grain high B.C.s. to discover if I truly have the best of both worlds. Can’t imagine I do not. Full reports coming to ronspomeroutdoors one of these days! Meantime, check out https://www.shawcustombarrels.com/. About the only issue I can anticipate with this fast a twist is possibly tearing apart thinly jacketed, soft lead core varmint bullets, probably lighter than 80 grains. However, my 1:8 twist 22-250 AI shoots 40-grain hollow points beautifully, with no problems.

I'm predicting you should have no issues with light bullets in a fast-twist barrel. Besides, you're building this 25-06 to shoot long range anyway, right? Good luck.

Ron
